The Kitchen Floor
Fall 2004
We got so tired
of the carpeted kitchen where Sherry finally decided that it must come
up.
The project was
started Wednesday evening (11/3/04), when Sherry started taking up the
carpet. She noticed that there was an older tile there, but it
was covered in carpet glue. Sherry did attempt to peel the glue
off, but it was going to be too exhausting if it was taking a good
hour for just one 9 x 9 tile. Michael and Sherry decided that
we'd be better off with new tile. So, we decided to go with a
wood grain vinyl tile.
Thursday, Dan and
Sherry took the rest of the carpet up along with the old tile.
Thursday evening, Sherry was laying the underlayment. Friday,
Sherry sanded and primered the floor. Dan, Michael and Sherry
started laying tile Friday evening after Lynn and Liz went to bed.
Mitzi was in charge of the paper off the tile until she gave up and
went to bed.
There are still 4
tiles left to lay, but we need to get more tile first. The rest
will be done on Saturday. We also need to put in the shoe
plates. We plan on painting the kitchen next spring.
We are so amazed
on how different the kitchen looks. It is so neat to be able to
walk across a vinyl tiled floor.
Here's during and
after pictures.

Kitchen
Painting
May 2005
I thought we had a good before shot of the
kitchen. Here's a picture of Dan putting plastic over the
cupboards. The doors are in the process of getting sanded down.

5/7/05...We spent all
yesterday on the kitchen. All the hard parts are done.
We're still finishing up the cupboard doors and the drawers.
Here's what we have done so far. The ceiling will be painted
blue.

5/11/05...The ceiling is
painted! Dan worked on it Monday night and Sherry finished it
yesterday. All that's really left of the kitchen is trim
touch-ups and the cupboard doors. We're getting new hardware for
the doors, so those won't be put up for a bit. The drawers are
painted and the pulls put back on. We're probably going to do
some kind of coppering technique to the pulls. We found out that
they don't make the size of pulls that we need anymore and we're not
wanting to drill more holes in the drawers.

5/30/05...We finished up
the kitchen last night. Michael hung the cupboard doors with the
new hinges we bought. The old ones were painted over so many
times and we couldn't get it all off. We also bought new knobs.
We bought one drawer pull just to see how it would work. They
don't make our size of pulls anymore, so we will need to drill a new
hole. We like how this one looks, so we're going to get the
rest. There is some stenciling I want to do above the cupboards
at some point, but that can wait a bit.

5/30/05...We decided to
get the new pulls. The top is the new one, compared to the old
one on the bottom.

Dining Room

Stucko walls = pain in
butt!!! It took a bit over 4 hours to paint the blue in this
picture. Does anyone have a wand to finish the rest? The
ceiling is all stucko too! It's quite a drastic change.

5/11/05: Here's a
better picture. We did some more yesterday. Mitzi helped
with some trim. The ceiling will be painted yellow (same color
as the kitchen walls.) We're really dreading the ceiling!
Stucko'd tiles...YUCK!!! Between the kitchen ceiling and dining
room walls, we've already gone through two gallons of blue paint!

5/27/05: The dining
room is DONE! We just got the new table that will seat all of
us. The chairs are on order, so it will be a few weeks for
those. All we have to do is accessorize!

Living Room
Painting
May 2005
Before:

During: 5/11/05...I just had to dig into the red paint just to see
what it would look like. Mitzi and I laid a coat last night over
the arch. It looks like we'll need at least two coats...probably
three. Here's a sneak peek (Lynn says 'Hi!')...

5/24/05...There was a lot of painting done last week. I'm
currently working on the trim. We still need another coat of
yellow on the ceiling, red on the walls and the remaining trim work.
The trim is the same color as the trim in the dining room. We
still have a whole gallon of the sage left, so we thought we'd give it
a shot. I'm usually not one to paint over varnished wood.
But, after seeing the walls, I thought a good contrast would look
good. Only the trim and ceiling molding will be painted.
The doors and inside of the windows will remain. So far, this is
how it looks...I included the before picture to compare.

To our amazement, the
living room does not look any smaller. It may be a bit darker,
but not as dark as one may think. It has a very warm and cozy
feeling. It's not cold and stale anymore!
Our next project for the
living room will be to sand and refinish the floor. Michael also
wants to paint the entertainment center to something that matches the
piano and other furniture.
5/30/05: I also
finished the living room last night! We have three rooms done.
We bought a new coffee/end table set Friday night. John gave us
a couple lamp shades that look great with the room, replacing the
bright white shades that stuck out with the red walls. We put up
the new valances last night. We're two valances short, so we'll
need to get more. All we have left to do is to put everything
back.

Evalynn &
Elizabeth's Bedroom Painting
May 2005
I haven't mentioned it
before, but I've added a room. Since the girls are up in WI
until Wednesday, I've decided it would be a good time to do their
room.
Three of the four walls
are stucko. We will not be painting the ceiling. The walls
will be a light blue and the trim will be green. I picked colors
that matched their curtains. I also found a lady bug stamp to
dress things up with. Their curtains have animals. I
figured that they have no bugs.
5/31/05...The room was
painted last night. The stucko was not as bad as the dining
room. I had more problems with the baseboards. The stucko
was laid over the baseboards, so it was hard to see where the
baseboard ends and wall begins. I got it as straight as I could.
All that's left is the
window and lady bugs.
10:00 PM...The room is
back together. All that's left is the bedding and general
reorganization. Here's pictures...
This was taken
3/20/04...we took the daybed out a few months ago.

After...

Here's a close-up of the
lady bug stamp. This one is on the back of the door. As
you can see from the picture above, the lady bugs are all around the
room. There's also a few on the closet door, doors and window
frames. Dan thought it looked like fun, so he wanted to do a
few. He thought it would look cool if it looked like they were
crawling in the window. We had all the colors on hand, so we
didn't have to worry about buying more paint. The heads were
made by combining green and red.

So, the bedroom was done
on goal. We pick Lynn and Liz up tomorrow!
